A Celebration of Sacrifice, Family, and Dominican Pride | St. John's University Honors Graduate
This blog is a little emotional for me to write.
As a Dominican American woman, and as someone married to a man who was raised by a single mother of three children, this celebration hit home in more ways than one. It served as a reminder that behind every diploma is a story one filled with sacrifice, perseverance, faith, and the unwavering support of family.
This beautiful graduation celebration was held at Margaret's Venue in Freeport, NY, honoring Kristal, who graduated with Honors from St. John's University. As I photographed the evening, it became clear that this event was about so much more than a degree. It was a celebration of generations of hard work, resilience, and dreams realized.
Every detail reflected the immense pride her family felt. From her mother's smile, to the presence of her grandmother, to the aunts, uncles, cousins, and loved ones who helped shape the woman she has become, there was not a single moment that went unnoticed or uncelebrated.
As children of immigrants, many of us understand that our accomplishments are rarely our own. They are built on the sacrifices of our great-grandparents, grandparents, and parents who worked tirelessly so future generations could have opportunities they never did. Throughout the evening, there was a deep sense of gratitude and pride in witnessing what it means to be the first in your family to graduate college and to do so with honors.
Kristal's entrance was one of my favorite moments of the day. She entered the room to the sounds of merengue típico (traditional Dominican merengue), a style of music deeply rooted in Dominican culture and heritage. The room immediately came alive. Later in the evening, guests danced to old-school Dominican favorites while a live band kept the celebration going. It felt less like an event and more like a family reunion filled with love, joy, and pride.
But what stayed with me most were the speeches.
A daughter stood before the people she loved most and thanked every person who helped her get to this moment. She spoke with confidence, grace, and gratitude. You could see that while the degree carried her name, she understood that this achievement belonged to so many people.
There was the sister who picked her up when she was homesick, who became her biggest cheerleader during difficult moments, reminding her, "You got this. We got this.
And then there was her mother.
The mother who worked multiple jobs, made sacrifices, and consistently put her children first. The kind of mother who gives up pieces of herself so her children can have opportunities she may never have had. Watching her look at her daughter throughout the evening was one of the most powerful moments of the celebration. There was pride, relief, gratitude, and love all wrapped into one expression.
As parents, we hope our children will have opportunities greater than our own. We pray that the sacrifices we make today will create a better tomorrow for them. For Kristal's mother, this was one of those moments where she could finally see those sacrifices come full circle.
Equally moving was seeing Kristal's grandmother present to witness this milestone. There was something incredibly beautiful about watching multiple generations gathered together to celebrate. A grandmother watching her granddaughter achieve something that perhaps wasn't accessible to her generation. A living reminder of how far a family can come in just a few generations.
Photography often allows me a front-row seat to some of life's most important moments, but every now and then, there is a celebration that reminds me why preserving these memories matters so much.
This was one of those celebrations.
This evening wasn't simply about earning a college degree. It was about a family's sacrifices being honored. It was about a mother seeing her hard work rewarded. It was about a grandmother witnessing a dream fulfilled through the next generation. It was about Dominican pride, resilience, and the belief that with faith, determination, and community, anything is possible.
Congratulations, Kristal. Your story is one of perseverance, family, faith, and purpose. Your achievement reflects not only your hard work, but the love and support of every person who helped you along the way.
May this be only the beginning of all that is still to come
